Debugging Javascript with Google Chrome

September 7, 2013

Google Chrome has some great tools in debugging javascript. Even changing or editing the code while debugging is possible. Every time I point an element in the debugger using the curser, that element in the page highlights, thus allowing me to see where is that element in my page. Below is my normal workflow in debugging js files.

  1. pressing F12 opens the debugging window
  2. clicking link of php, js, css files in that page opens that file and transfers me to the Sources tab
  3. I click the left most side of the scripts to create a breakpoint.
  4. I press F5 to reload the page thus start the debugging.
  5. the page then stops at my first break point.
  6. here, you can either press F8 (continue to the next breakpoint) F10 (go to the next line) F11 (go inside a function
  7. while debugging on a certain line, you can edit that line and automatically saves the file.
  8. although you can edit any line even without debugging, but the tool will not automatically saves it for you so you must press ctrl + s to save and replace it to the location the file exist.

People in their comments say that its much easier to debug javascript files in browsers. I use netbeans as a editor for most of my files and use xdebug for php files.

the image shows when you press F12, or press the left most bottom icon to dock to the browser.

just comment if you have something to add/opinions on how you use the debugger on Google Chrome.
